Volunteers Needed for Admissions Workshop

APALSA is affiliated with the Diversity Committee which is comprised of numerous organizations and students within the law school. We will be hosting numerous functions this year including an Admissions Workshop, Battle of the Brains, and Diversity Formal.

Next Saturday, October 28, 2006, the Diversity Committee will be hosting an Admissions Workshop for undergraduate students to help them prepare and to answer any questions they may have regarding law school admissions. We currently have 100+ attendees and need student volunteers.

If interested, please email usdlawdiversity@yahoo.com. The workshop runs from 10 am to 1 pm, setup starting at 9 am.

Also, next Saturday is Judge Lim's potluck, so we can all carpool afterwards.

Judicial Internship Opportunity Program

The Judicial Internship Opportunity Program is a summer program open to all first or second year minority or financially disadvantaged students who want to do legal research and writing for state or federal judges in California (LA and SF), Phoenix, AZ, Washington, D.C., Miami, FL, Texas (Houston, Dallas, Southern and Eastern) or Illinois (Chicago and circuit courts throughout the state).

Interns will receive an award of $1,500. The time commitment can vary by student, subject to a 6 week minimum. The American Bar Association Section of Litigation is the sponsor of this program.

Second year students may begin to apply for the program now. First year students may begin to apply on December 1. Screening interviews will be held on a rolling admission basis. Screening interviews will begin in November and will continue through the application process. All applications must be postmarked by January 12, 2007. Students are asked to submit a completed application, legal writing sample and a statement of interest. Application materials are available in the Career Services office and on the program website.

This is a terrific program! However, as it has gained in popularity it has become more competitive! Early applications have an advantage.

Please refer to the website, www.abanet.org/litigation/jiop for additional information or feel free to contact the program director, Gail Howard at 312-988-6348, howardg@staff.abanet.org with any questions.
