Upcoming Events

Hope everyone's semester has started off on the right foot, but here are the upcoming events APALSA has planned for Spring Semester. So mark your calendars.

Diversity Alumni-Student Mixer - Wed. - 1/31/07 - 6:00 PM - IPJ - The Diversity Committee will be hosting a Diversity Alumni Student Mixer at 6:00 pm at the IPJ. There will be a introduction of each alumni with an informal networking session with catering of food and drinks.

First General Meeting - Wed. - 2/7/07 - NOON - 2A/2B - APALSA will be having two general meetings this semester. The first general meeting will be on 2/7/07 at Noon at either 2A or 2B (more information will follow) to discuss the upcoming spring events. FOOD WILL BE PROVIDED. We will be having a second general meeting sometime later for elections for next year's cabinet.

Chinese New Years Celebration - 2/15/07 - DJ's - Come celebrate the Year of Pig the Thursday before Chinese New Years at DJ's. We will be celebrating the new years by giving out red envelopes filled with candy and gift certificates to Starbucks and various places.

FALSD & PALSD End of the Year Banquet - 2/23/07 - San Diego Sheraton - APALSA will hopefully be buying several tables to the FALSD and PALSD end of the year banquet. Each ticket is worth $60 dollars and the school will be subsidizing our costs. This is a great way to network with Asian attorneys in San Diego while enjoying wine and cheese and a great dinner with a great view.
Attendance will be first come first serve. More details to come. Afterwards, we will be heading down to the W Hotel for more drinks and fun.

Multicultural Day - 2/24/07 - USD - APALSA with the Diversity Committee will be hosting a Multicultural Day on Saturday from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm. We will be providing tours, mock classes, mock trials, etc. for high school students that are interested in law or graduate school.

Diversity Week and Diversity Formal - 3/12-3/16 - APALSA is helping to host our first annual Diversity Week, entitled "Challenge Your Assumptions" at USD. During this week, APALSA will be hosting a day where we will have our annual barbeque fundraiser, film screenings, etc. At the end of the week, we will be hosting a Diversity Formal with the Diversity Committee as well as with other student organizations of TJ and Cal Western, in celebrating diversity with prominent attorneys and judges.

San Diego County Bar Association Law School Event

This is a friendly reminder to all of you that THIS FRIDAY, January 26th, at 5:30 pm is SDCBA's first law student event of the year! "How to Obtain a Summer Internship or Clerkship" featuring great speakers from all the public agencies in town plus two prestigious law firms.

They have worked tremendously hard to plan this event for us, so don't miss out!!!! Take advantage of your fully paid for membership in the Bar Association and meet lawyers and get some great career advice (and free food and beverages).

Following the event...there will be a FREE Happy Hour at BASIC (which is also where Bar Review is) a hot, new venue located near the ballpark on 10th and J Street. http://www.barbasic.com. It is a very cool, laid back, trendy place. The cover will be $5 with student ID after 10 pm. There is no cover if you go followuing the SDCBA event.

The event is at the SD County Bar Center, at 1333 7th Avenue.

AALDEF Summer Internships

Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) has two summer internship programs available for 1L and 2Ls. One is unpaid and the other pays up to $1,800 a week. The corporate internship is DUE this FRIDAY, JANUARY 19, 2007 and the summer legal internship is DUE JANUARY 31, 2007. 2007 SUMMER LEGAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) is looking for student legal interns for the summer of 2007. The following program areas are available:

Anti-trafficking project
Community Health Care Initiative
Economic Justice for Workers
Educational Equity and Youth Rights
Immigrant Access to Justice
Korean Community Law Project
New Jersey Asian American Legal Project
Voting Rights

The summer program is 10 weeks from approx. 6/4/07 through 8/10/07. Interns work full time and are supervised by attorneys in specific program areas. Interns will work on litigation, particularly legal research and writing, legal and policy advocacy, community outreach and education, and client intakes. The position is unpaid however in previous years many interns have been successful in securing independent funding and work study funds may also be available. Academic credit can be arranged.

Any bilingual ability should be stated in the app. Bilingual ability is helpful but not required. Interviewing will take place in early Feb however some interviews may be conducted on a rolling basis prior to that time.

PFIZER INC/AALDEF CORPORATE LEGAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

AALDEF is collaborating with Pfizer to seek qualified law students interested in obtaining a unique experience in corp legal environment. AALDEF is assisting Pfizer in the recruitment of highly qualified Asian American law students who are considering careers in corp legal depts.

Student interns will work in a team environment on a wide range of summer projects in such areas as employment, IP, commercial transactions, regulatory and international law. This summer internship will not lead to a permanent position at the completion of the program or immediately after graduation.

Applicants must be enrolled as a first-year or second-year law student in an accredited law school and have a min GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The paid internship runs for approx 10-12 weeks with a summer stipend as high as $1,800 per week.
